Martyrdom in Imam Khomeini's Intellect

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Martyrdom in Imam Khomeini’s Intellect

Occasion: the Anniversary of the Leaders’ Martyrdom

God say in the verse: Those who believed and fled (their homes), and strove hard in Allah’s Way with their property and their souls, are much higher in rank with Allah And those are they who are the achievers (of their objects)﴿. Martyrdom for the sake of Allah is one of the ways in order for you to let God be pleased with you and to be close to him. The concept of martyrdom means to be killed for the sake of a lofty and a noble goal for the obedience of God the Almighty. While speaking about the martyrdom in the intellect and the blessed path of the departed Imam Khomeini (May his secret be sacred), we should definitely point out to a lot of essential titles which the Imam had stated such as the recompense of the martyr, and how can the person attain to the martyrdom rank for the sake of Allah.

The Martyr’s Recompense

“Above every goodness is goodness, until that time that a person is killed for the sake of Allah. So then when he is killed for the sake of Allah, there is no other goodness greater than this”, by this well-known prophetic tradition which is related to Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him and his household), Imam Khomeini starts his talking about the martyr’s recompense. Imam (May his secret be sacred) says: “If the writers and the fluent ones and I wanted to count the value and the recompense of the martyrs and the strugglers and their sacrifices and consequences for the sake of Allah, we should confess that we are weak; so how if we want to count the moral degrees and the humanitarian and the divine issues that are related to martyrdom, no doubt that we will feel so confess and slacken”, Imam Khomeini adds saying: “Whatever we say about those who had emigrate from the nature and the present life to go to the Messenger of Allah and have the honor to be in the God’s paradise, we will not give them their right”.

The Philosophy of Martyrdom

Martyrdom was never a forfeiture and a gap in the nation, in which the result due to that will be the forfeit of the developing generation of the youths, but the issue will be as such if the goal of jihad is just to protect ourselves, and when we loss ourselves, then we will be losing in the battle and we will be defeated. But the goal of jihad is to achieve the great humanitarian goal which God want it from the person, which is to obey God the Almighty, and this happens through performing the divine commandment by preserving the nation’s dignity and the Muslims’ honor and their sacred things. Regarding this, Imam Khomeini says: “You had triumphed over your fancies, you are in the rear of the front lines, and your brothers are in the front lines. You struggled and you knew that the life is perpetuity and this animalism and materialism life will vanish, then you will triumph, and as long as this is your doctrine, you are the victors even if you defeated formally and materially”. Imam Khomeini states also: “America’s traitors should know that martyrdom for the sake of Allah couldn’t be gauged with dominance and defeat in the battle fields. Martyrdom’s degree means the termination of slavery and progression and conduct in the moral life…”

How can you be a Martyr?

Undoubtedly that martyrdom is a divine grace that God grant and the person can’t do it by himself. Imam Khomeini (May his secret be sacred) adds saying: “With respect to us, martyrdom is a great flood” but this doesn’t mean that God give it for any one and haphazardly; regarding this, Imam Khomeini says: “Martyrdom is a gift given from God for the ones who are qualified for it”. Hence, the characteristic of the martyr should be found in the person and he should be qualified for martyrdom in order for God to bestow martyrdom upon him. And some of these conditions are:

1- Asceticism in the Present life: Imam Khomeini focused on that through his speeches: “The world with all what it contains such as its counterfeits and esteems is too much inferior to be recompense and a degree for the strugglers for the sake of Allah”.

2- Being Related with Ashuraa: With respect to this, Imam Khomeini implies through his speech: “We don’t care if our youths martyred and their blood were shed for the sake of Islam, we don’t care if martyrdom became an inheritance for our youths. This is the pleased procedure that is followed by the Commander of the Faithful Shiite since the beginning of Islam and until today”.

3- Being related with Martyrs: being related with martyrs let the spirituality of the person be close from their spirituality, and hence the person will be ready to receive the divine flood that they had received, which is martyrdom. In many occasions, Imam Khomeini (may his secret be sacred) assured that: “Martyrs are considered the leaders of the path, and the instructors in the struggle world. Thus, we should benefit from them”.

Eventually, all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
