The Etiquettes of Ashouraa

In the Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

We offer our deepest condolences to The Master of This Time Imam Al-Mahdi (May God hasten his honorable revelation), the Muslims' Authority during the absence of Imam Al-Mahdi (May God hasten his honorable revelation) Imam Al-Khaminaei (May God lengthen his presence among us), and all the believers in particular the resistants for the great calamity of Abou Abdullah Al-Houssein ibn Ali (God's peace bestowed upon both) whom The Most High and Glorified God willed that the vehemence of his assistance never die out in the hearts of the believers. It is the beginning of Sacred Muharram, and The Impeccable Household (God's peace bestowed upon them) impressed upon certain etiquettes which the believers must have regard to, among which we mention the following.

Showing Grief

It is related that Imam Ali Al-Reda (peace be upon him) said, "When Muharram came, my Father (peace be upon him) was never seen laughing. He (peace be upon him) used to be overwhelmed with gloominess till the first ten days passed. When the tenth day came, it was the day of his calamity, grief, and weeping."

Grief is not shown only by gloominess and crying but also by declaring general mourning. As regards this, the deceased Authority of Muslims Imam Al-Khomeini (May His secret be sacred) said, "Let the dimmed-with-blood banners of Ashouraa be raised higher and higher, thus declaring that the day when the oppressed revenge from the oppressor is coming soon."

Weeping on Imam Al-Houssein (peace be upon him)

It is related that Imam Zein Al-Abideen (peace be upon him) said: "Any one whose eyes dropped one drop, or shed tears, even one tear, about us, God will let him be in the paradise".

It is related that Imam Ali Al-Reda (peace be upon him) said, "Let the mourners weep on Al-Houssein (peace be upon him), for weeping on him obliterates the great sins." Weeping on Imam Al-Houssein (peace be upon him) has many significances, about some of which Imam Al-Khomeini (May his secret be sacred) said, "Weeping on the calamity of Imam Al-Houssein (peace be upon him) is a revival of the revolution and the idea that the little group must face a huge empire."

Condoling the Believers

It is related that Imam Abou Jaafar (peace be upon him) said, "…Then let him lament on Al-Houssein (peace be upon him) and weep on him and order whom he is not cautious of in his house to weep on him…Let them condole each other for their calamity due to what happened to Al-Houssein." When asked, "How do we condole each other?" he answered, "Say, 'May God increase our reward for our calamity due to what happened to Al-Houssein (peace be upon him). And may God count us among those asking for his revenge with our Authority from Mohammad's Household (God's prayers and peace bestowed upon them) Imam Al-Mahdi (May God hasten his honorable revelation).'"

Participating in the condoling procession

Imam Khomeini (May his secret be sacred) said: "These drops of tears that are shed on Imam Hussein had preserved the believe, so that it reached to us, and these marches of slapping the breasts had given life to us." He (May his secret be sacred) added saying: "Attending the Housseinian gatherings, hearing the consolations, slapping the breasts and heads, and getting out with the housseinian marches, all agitates the people's feelings toward the family of the Prophet (peace be upon them), which in turn is a very great thing.

Reciting and Listening to Al-Housseinian Poetry

It is related that Imam Jaafar Al-Sadik (peace be upon him) said, "He who recites a verse of poetry about Al-Houssein (peace be upon him) then he cries and drives other ten people to cry is, along with them, granted heaven."

It has become habitual to recite and listen to Al-Housseinian poetry in Ashouraa councils which Imam Al-Khomeini (May his secret be sacred) called to activate: "Let the councils commemorating the memory of The Master of the Oppressed and the Free be held with more reverence and more attendance, for they are the councils of the triumph of the powers of reason over those of ignorance, of justice over oppression, of loyalty over treason, of the government of Islam over the government of tyranny."

Also, Al-Housseinian poetry is recited and listened to during slapping processions which Imam Al-Khomeini (May his secret be sacred) called to benefit by its significations: "Slapping the breasts must be meaningful as well."

Visiting Imam Al-Houssein (peace be upon him)

It is related that Imam Mohammad Al-Baker (peace be upon him) said, "He who visits Al-Houssein ibn Ali (God's peace bestowed upon both) on the tenth of Muharram and stays there weeping meets The Most Glorified and Reverent God with the reward of two thousand pilgrimages, two thousand visits to Makka, and two thousand invasions done with God's prophet (God's prayers bestowed upon him and his Household) and The Imams on the right path." After Imam Al-Baker (peace be upon him) had mentioned Ashouraa visit, he added, "If you can visit him everyday at your house, then do it for you will attain the reward of all of this [the two thousand pilgrimages, visits to Makka, and invasions with God's prophet (God's prayers bestowed upon him and his Household) and The Imams on the right path].

Eventually, all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.
