Stoppage at Suspicions

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

The Commander of the Faithful said: “the most piety person is he who stops at suspicions”.

One of the most prominent behavioral titles that distinguish believers and pious people among others is stopping at suspicions i.e. being careful of not doing any issue that is likely to be illicit or there is doubt in it.

Generous scholars expressed this situation i.e. stopping at suspicions and nominated it “piety of virtuous people” which is considered a degree of devoutness piety is set to devoutness which means giving up prohibited issues and could be set to giving up suspicions also.

The Commander of the Faithful (A.S) considered stoppage at suspicions is a unique degree of piety, and he said with this respect: “no profit is greater than divine reward, no abstinence is better than to restrain’ one’s mind from doubts (about religion), no virtue is better than refraining from prohibited deeds.”

He says in the same infallible: “stopping at suspicions is better than plunging into perditions.”

Imam Sadiq (A.S) said: “there are three issues: issue with clear reason so is followed, issue with clear seduction so is avoided, and a problematic issue which perception is referred to Allah and his messenger”. The messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “obvious licit issue, and obvious illicit issue, and suspicions among them, so he who gave up suspicions shall be rescued from illicit issues, and he who follows suspicions shall commit illicit issues and be ruined”.

In his famous letter to his representative to Basra, Uthman bin Hunayf, the Commander of the Faithful said: “Oh Ibn Hunayf, I was told that a young man from Basra invited you to a luncheon so you hurried towards him… look towards what you bite: eject what you don’t know and eat what you are sure that it has a good tasty”.

Here is an invitation of the Commander of the Faithful and the lord of monotheists (A.S) for us to be cautious of our religion issues and pay attention to the necessity of going along the straightway which is very clear and doesn’t contain any ambiguity at all.

Among the issues he warned from (A.S.ٍ): “never fall into suspicions and adore desires, they conduct you to illicit issues and to commit sins.”

The messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “every property has a patronage and the patronage of Allah are his licit and the illicit issues and the suspicions among them, as if a shepherd was grazing his sheep side by side with the patronage and he didn't take care of them from falling, so you should give up suspicions.”

May Allah grant success to us and to you to be careful in the issues of Sharia and life, and may Allah preserve us from slips, mistakes and falling into suspicions, he is the listener of invocations.

Eventually, all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
