The Fatal Sins
The belittled sins, the sins regarded by the committer as trifles, the sins from
which meat and blood grows, usurping the money of a Muslim, the sins on which
one insists, delight for committing sins, denial of woman’s dowry, denial of the
wage of a laborer, bravado for committing sins, proclamation of sins.
Effects of Sins
Hardens the heart, eliminates bounty, deprives one of the night optional
prayers, obliterates good deeds, brings about disease, reduces the means of
sustenance, brings about misfortunes, brings about the plights that were not
known before (note AIDS and spread of deadly diseases), makes manners bad,
reduces rain, makes misfortunes rampant such that they become rampant: “And
beware of an affliction which will surely not smite exclusively those among you
who have done wrong”, kills cattle.
Sins Whose Punishment is Hastened Before Death
Being mean to parents, doing injustice to people, exchange of meanness for
favor, exchange of betrayal for fulfillment, bad relations with relatives,
perjury, doing injustice to the weak who have no support save for Allah.
Deeds that Wipe Out Sins
Poverty, disease, all kinds of plights that inflict soul and money, fear of the
ruler, tough throes of death, anguish (the hours of anguish erase the hours of
sins), tears, grief, worry, the one who is worried about the means of living,
fearful dreams and nightmares, frequent good deeds, good manners, truthfulness,
shyness, gratitude, rescue of the afflicted, frequent prostration, Hajj and
Umrah, supplication for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
and His family, shaking hands, prayers, meting of legal punishment.
