Q: My wife is a sayyid while I am not. In view of the fact that sayyids’ fitrah
is separately received, should I pay her own fitrah to the fund specified for
sayyids?
A: The standard to follow in paying zakat al-fitrah is the paterfamilias (fitrah
prayer) not his dependant family members. Therefore, you are not allowed to pay
your zakat al-fitrah to sayyids even though your wife is a sayyid.
