Pictures from Al-Kathimiya, Baghdad
The Shrine of Imam Musa Al-Kathem and his Grandson Imam Muhammad Al-Jawad (peace
be upon them)
Imam Musa Al-Kathem (peace be upon him) was poisoned in prison and was buried in
the eastern side of Baghdad in the Cemeteries of Quraysh. His grandson, Imam
Muhammad Al-Jawad (peace be upon him), was poisoned around 37 years later and
was buried near him.
The following pictures are a glimpse into history. They are rare and we obtained
them from the official website of the Kathimiya Shrine.
After the burial of the two Imams (peace be upon them), people started
constructing their homes around the burial site and started to live there in
order to protect the shrine, manage its affairs and offer lodging to those who
came to visit it. This region swiftly developed and became linked to Baghdad.
The Shrine at Kathimiya was re-built throughout history a number of times, and
the first time it was built was directly after the death of Imam Musa Al-Kathem
(peace be upon him) in the year 183 of the Hejira.
