Martyrdom of Imam Hassan (peace be upon him)
Sheikh Al-Mufid recounted how Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) died.
After the treaty between Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) and Mu'awiyah, the Imam
(peace be upon him) went to Medina and remained there. He remained at home and
was very patient. After ten years of his rule, Mu'awiyah decided to take the
pledge of allegiance from the Muslims for his son Yazid and so he told Jo'da,
one of the wives of Imam Hassan (peace be upon him), that if she would poison
her husband he would marry her to Yazid. Jo'da poisoned the Master of the Youth
of Heaven and he remained sick for forty days and was martyred in the month of
Safar. He was 48 years old and the period of his Imamate lasted for 10 years.
Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) was the one who washed him the ritual ablution
for the dead and he buried him in the graveyard of Baqi' near the grave of his
grandmother Fatima daughter of Asad (mother of Imam Ali [peace be upon him]). As
for the day of his martyrdom, some chroniclers say that it was on the seventh of
Safar and some say that it was on the 28th.
Jo'da never married Yazid.
